This thread is for examples of colors and "speckled" vs. "mottled". Please do not post here asking what your dog is - this thread is for reference only.

Questions, please post to this thread: http://www.aucado.us/forums/showthread.php?t=21053&highlight=color
Thanks!

I just posted this on Mojo's thread. Hope it's ok to add it here too.

-------------------------------------------------------

Ivy I believe is considered a mottled (larger white spots):

My old girl Lily was considered a speckled, white hairs ticking through her coat (roan) (Her AKC papers stated she was speckled, although she matured very dark there were still white hairs throughout her coat):

I am pretty sure that the definitions are the same for blue or red.

I like this page for the best explanations and pictures that I can understand:

And this one is good if you want to understand the genetic info more:

http://www.adcb.au.com/

But like this explains, I always thought mottle was spots against a light (white background) and speckle as white spots against a red or blue background.

Looking at these pictures Lily is a dark blue, which I agree with. Her papers say speckled which I always thought was odd. ;)

Darcy was registered when he was a puppy, he was registered as speckle

He is two now and his blue body color is much darker. The creeping tan or saddle appeared at about 6 months.

What an interesting change! I would never have guessed it was the same dog. Still handsome though!

This is what I had posted in the Mojo thread....seems to be about right, according to a link above...

My understanding is that a blue dog with white spots is more or less speckled, whereas a dog with white as the dominant colour with blue spots is mottled.

Speckled:

Mottled:

That's what a supposed cattle dog expert told me anyway. (I thought Banjo was mottled, but he's in fact speckled{?})

Lucy is a dark blue, just like her mama (Dharma)

Mojo actually is a blue - he has no speckles?? Below are the birthday kids - they looked like twins as puppies. First Kelli's Twister from New England then my Cher ...these are speckles. My other dogs are various colors of blue -- from a silvery blue blue to a dark why do they call them blue? LOL

I thought I'd move these nice examples to this thread.
