Thanks Ei. I have had 3 dogs with Cushings. I think a lot of people see the signs of Cushings and think their dog is just getting old.

One of the dangers is that many vets really aren't into treating Cushings. Some just see it as a condition that isn't treatable or that treating isn't necessary. My advice for anyone with a vet like that is to get a referral to an internal medicine specialist vet. In most cases, Cushings can be managed.

I thought Josie's problems were due to her age and it wasn't until it was too late that I found out she had Cushings. She was in liver and kidney failure when I had to send her to the Bridge. Carol brought up a good point. If you think there is something wrong with your dog and your vet isn't doing testing or treating the dog find a vet that specializes in internal medicine.

Diane, I think it is very easy to mistake Cushings signs for old age. My own theory is that a lot of cases of Cushings are not diagnosed for this reason, and Cushings is more common than we realize.

Our golden retriever, who is 13, has just in the last 3 or 4 months become extra thirsty. His appetite is the same, he eats well, and he still holds his urine for up to 10-12 hours, so no problems there. I found that article on Cushings, but the only symptom he seems to have is the thirst. It could be that he is going into kidney failure, as he has been on allergy medicine his whole life. I am actually amazed that he is still around and as healthy as he is at this age. But I realize he may not be around much longer. His next checkup is in April. I will be asking the vet about the increased urination then.
