Default Croydon nearly died last night heaps of bentleys needed

Last night I went downstairs and could'nt find Croydon. I found him on the back step with blood all around him I quickly got a torch and saw that he was hardly breathing and he was coughing up blood there was so much of it I was in a panic. I quickly got my mobile and my dad and loaded him in the back of my car and drove like a mad rat to the Animal Hospital calling them on the way to let them know I was bringing him in and what was happening with him. When we arrived they were waiting outside with a trolley and quickly got him to the emergency room they estimated from his blood pressure and the amount of blood that was coming out he had lost nearly a third of his blood they put a camera down his throat and found the bleeding was coming from his stomach. They told me they did'nt know if they could save him but he would need a specialist surgeon who was on his way from the city and a lot of luck from above. I could'nt stop crying and with that news I just colapsed in a heap on the floor. I begged please please try. The surgeon arrived and Croydon was in the operating theatre immediately for hours to me it felt like days I just cried and cried the whole time I just could'nt lose my darling boy not like this. They had been pumping blood into him from the time he arrived which I am sure helped. After a really long time the surgeon came out and said they found a sharp piece of plastic that had pierced the stomach lining he showed it to me it was from a yoghurt container. Obviously he had got it out of mum and dads bin. He told me they had stopped the bleeding, stitched up the hole in the stomach and now have him on strong sedatives so he can get his strength back but he is not out of the woods yet but he is a robust dog and he feels that he will pull through. This morning I went up again after getting home at 2am I did'nt sleep, to see him he is still sedated but they said his vital signs have improved but he has a way to go after losing so much blood. On a lighter note yesterday Croydon's health insurance was due I was debating whether to keep it as it had gone up to AUD$900 but I paid it how lucky was that as this is going to cost a fortune. Please pray for my Croydon he is all I have and I have had a really bad time lately but that is not for this forum. Croydon needs all the Bentleys you can send he is not out of the woods yet and things could change for the worse at anytime Anne and a very sick Croydon

Good Heavens !! Heaps of Bentleys from me.

It is just scary that a yogurt container can do so much damage. My pup is a total scrounger for food (or anything that remotely smells like food). I will be much more diligent after hearing your experience.

Anne, all the Bentleys we can sum up are being sent your way for your sweet Croydon. Please let us know how he is doing. I am glad you were able to keep his health insurance. You are both fighters! It is good to share this with us as a warning too; sometimes we get so complacent with our dogs, and we need to be vigilant about what they can get into.

Tears welled while I was reading. Bentleys for Croyden and hugs to you. Thank you for sharing your story. I have been guilty of letting my dogs lick the yogurt container clean and not paying much attention to it. Not anymore. I hope you get your boy back home soon.

Anne, I was so sorry to read about Croydon and the yogurt container. 3 Bentley's lit here and prayers and positive thoughts that he has a full recovery. I can't even image how awful this was for you. It is lucky that you paid for his health insurance. Get better soon, Croydon.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. My heart was racing as I was reading your post. Bandito always licks the yogurt containers from DH but he never ever chews them. Now Ill be more on the watch for this. Hoping that your boys bounces back just perfect!

Thank you all so much for your prayers, support and bentleys it means so much to me and has helped me get through this terrible ordeal. Croydon is still listed as critical and stable. I just sit with him and pat him and talk to him I know he can hear me. I was very upset by a comment a nurse made "If you had found him an hour later you would have found a dead dog. What do you think of that? With all I am going through I don't need a comment like that. The doctor said today "Croydon looks bad I know with all those tubes and monitors on him and being in the intensive unit probably makes you a bit anxious however we have now ruled out that any plastic made it to the bowels. We did'nt want to upset you more by telling you that until we had an answer and we hope that if his vitals improve at the rate they are he should be out of this unit in 2 to 3 days. I had not even considered that and I am glad he did'nt tell me that before. But the comment the nurse made has made me keep thinking the what if? I just want my best friend back he has been there for me through all the bad years I had with my post traumatic stress disorder. He knows when I am upset his licks, his head on my lap, his paw on my leg saying it's alright mummy when I cry. Oh now I have tears in my eyes I will stop now. Thanks again for your support for Croydon he needs those bentleys while he is still critical. Anne and my darling friend Croydon the best friend I ever had I just want you home.

Kudos to your vet for knowing not to give you more to worry about than necessary. Shame on that nurse for being so insensitive and adding to your anxiety.

So glad Crydon is on the mend.

Even tho my babies are in a boarding kennel, and have given up hope of ever seeing momma and daddy again, I'm sure they are sending their two Bentleys your way over the pond.

Thank you again so much for your support through this terrible time. I am happy to report that yesterday Croydon woke up and I was the first person he saw he turned his head and saw me and his tale wagged a little bit at he tried to lick me I had tears in my eyes it was such a beautiful moment. The doctors were amazed at how quickly he recognised me and that it showed the massive blood loss had had no effect on his brain functions which is a great sign. He was moved to the recovery section thismorning and will be there a few days but with his rate of improvement and after a few more tests there is a chance he will be home with me Sunday or Monday as long as someone is home 24 hours a day. He will be still medicated and will need help getting down the 2 stairs to the yard to go potty and may need to be held up if he gets wobbly. This will only be for the first 3-4 days. He will be fed a type of porridge which they will give me it is a type of meat, vitamins and veges in powder form that turns into a porridge when water is added and heated up. Then he will be on blended food they will give me all the directions when he is discharged. They did try to give him the porridge today but he vomitted it up but they told me it was nothing to worry about. His stomach is obviously not ready to take it yet so he will remain on a drip and given water only but that they will be monitoring. If it keeps up he will need another endoscopy to make sure there are no further problems in his stomach. I told them that with his diabetes incipidis he often gulps down water and vomits it up that did'nt seem to bother them but they are going to look into it and make sure there is nothing else wrong with him. Oh please don't let anything else be wrong with him. So they are going to run some blood panels just to be sure given that he has had cancer before oh God that would be the last thing I would need to hear now. I am going to think positively though and pray that I have my baby home on the weekend or Monday at the latest. Please keep the bentleys coming until he is completely out of the woods. Once again thank you Anne and an improving Croydon

Thank you for the update. My Zoey had major abdominal surgery when she was about eleven months after she managed to swallow a six inch bone shard that had splintered. They had to open her up and pull it out and stem the bleeding. She almost died. Scary stuff when our furbabies are injured or ill. It took about two weeks for her to return to her normal happy self but she did. It sounds like Croyden is in wonderful, capable hands, and that he recognizes you. All great signs. Stay positive.
