In The Hidden Life of Dogs Elizabeth Marshall Thomas writes about the den her dogs had dug as the height of their achievement. I have never had a dog that dug a den until now...here is Scouty's so far, he works on it almost every day. Has anyone else's dog made a den?

Ding has two "Ding Ditches" under the back of the house and when we lived in our old house she had one under the back stairs. She's very diligent about working on them and doing stuff to them. I think she made two here because Tugger didn't know how to make one for himself so she made him one.

We're used to it by now but it was odd at first.

Matty has a ''secret island'' in the back of my flower bed.
She dug it out under some Solomon Seal plants. The plants have arching
stems and hide the lair perfectly. There is a barely noticeable path through the daylilys leading into the lair. It was there for months before I discovered it. She is very secretive about coming and going to her secret
island because she knows she is not supposed to be in the flowers. :naughty:

The boys and Molly don't have a den but they have the cool room. It's the area under the hemlock trees. Molly loves to walk back & forth under it in the mornings. She'll hang out in there for awhile. :biggrin2:

I love Scouty's den. That's really cool. :biggrin2:

If Dingo has one outside I don't know about it. He does like to lie in the shade under a dogwood we have. If he's not there he's in a big stuffed chair on the patio.

His dens indoors include a little hidey hole in the pedestal frame of our bed, and he likes it under a certain chair in the human den.

Neither of our boys has an outside den per se but Bud has his inside. Under our bed is his den and we call him the Troll cos he gets narky when anyone walks over his bridge and doesn't pay the toll :naughty:

That's so sweet that Ding made Tugger his own den! And I love Scouty's den, looks like something any 8YO boy would love!

We had a huge burn pile in the back of our property from all the trees we cut down, dead branches, yard waste, etc. We couldn't burn it for 2 years because of drought here. Early this past Spring, I "lost" Logan when we were up there playing. I was looking around and saw dirt flying out of the burn pile. Sure enough, Logan had tunneled into it and dug himself out a little cave. It had obviously been there a while, he was just remodeling it that day. We were finally able to burn this year so it's gone now. Now he has dug himself a hole under the deck steps. Oh, and he also had a hole under our agility A-Frame. No photos though.

Scouty is an excellent den builder. When I was little our GSD would build dens in the back yard.

Laura: Scouty looks so proud of himself! What a cute boy in his hideout!

Our guys like to dig themselves small holes in the dirt to lay in (in the shade, of course). Nash likes to plop down in the middle of our society garlic--I think he feels like he's "hiding" from us.

Oh, and he's a couch troll, too: Like Bud, he'll hide under the reclining foot part of our couch and you'll forget he's there, until he growls at Pandora if she tries to steal whatever toy he's chewing on. :biggrin2:

I would post pix but I don't have any because Ding manage to make their ditches massively inconvenient for humans to access. I can see them down there but to get a decent picture would require contortions which I am not capable of :roll1:.

I think she did it rather grudgingly as if he were just too darn dopey and she didn't want him to take her ditch.

He also has an inside lair which is under the dining room table with all the chairs mostly pushed in. He can arrange the chairs to his comfort level. Most of dining room chairs have long skirts on them so you can only see him from the head of the table looking in.

See her little face way back there!

The path leading in is only really visable form the lair looking out:

She has to jump a little fence to get in and out. She leaves barely a trace
that she come and goes.

awww. I made Bindi a den by putting a throw over her crate and putting the crate in the corner. Did I take all the fun out of it?

Thanks guys!
I do love my flowers. They are all perennials and my old friends that greet me every spring. They are also very hardy and hard to kill...
Take a look at what Mariels demon tribe did to them last year:

This is what my backyard looks like if I don't watch the dogs 24/7 or put them in the dog run! EVERYTHING on the ground.. on the picnic table.. in the shed.. anywhere they can reach is fair game and is to be played tug of war with and shredded to peices

Here are some photos of Logan in his indoor den - in the corner behind the end table, right on the AC vent. He hides back there, stashes toys, and lays right on vent so when he comes out the entire left side of his body is ice cold! He'd have never survived in the Outback! :roll1:

Finally I was able to get a picture of Tugger in his indoor "den"...which is under the dining room table.

We've offered him a crate but he seems to prefer under the dining room table best of all.
